Madurai Mani Iyer came from a family of great Carnatic musicians. He rose to fame nearly fifty years ago. He won many titles and awards, the most noteworthy among them being that of "Sangeetha Kalanidhi" in 1959 and "Rashtrapathi Award" in 1960.

The most distinctive feature of his music is in his "sancharas" which carry the audience to great heights of ecstasy. His "swara prastharas" are accliamed as masterly and unrivalled (although this particular rendition of "Maye" is very brief and he does not dwell on "swaraprastharas").

Here is an article in The Hindu about Madurai Mani on his birth anniversary (25/10/2002).
